<image:title>Teens - Teenagers are unique.</image:title>
<image:caption>As a teenager, friends become more important than anything, sports and activities can take over, pressure to do or be a certain way can be overwhelming. Teens often have a harder time talking to their parents or family members about things. It’s a time when you can feel so confident and so uncertain at the exact same time. Therapy for teens looks a little different, because teens are different. If you are looking for a space where you get to just show up exactly as you are, talk about what is going on, and get some new ideas then you’re in the right place. The therapy we provide is private, relaxed, and supportive. Some typical areas we work with teens on include: Overwhelm & stress Peer issues School stress/avoidance Family stress/conflict Identity Self-esteem Self harm Suicidal ideation Teenagers come with caregivers too who may have the same or different concerns than the teen in the room. In most cases, it is required that caregivers consent to therapy for their teenager and we hold an initial session with the caregivers as well. Sometimes caregivers are highly involved, sometimes not; we can work together to determine what will be the best fit for you.</image:caption>

<image:title>Trauma - Trauma. Stressful experiences. Significant events.</image:title>
<image:caption>When you endure something that is beyond what your mind and body can handle in that moment, it can create a lasting impact. Therapy can help to reduce the heaviness you feel from the event and give tools for coping as you move forward through your life. After going through a significant or traumatic event, you may experience things like: feeling on edge, being irritable, having nightmares, dissociating, or avoiding certain places or things. While these (and other) symptoms are typical responses to a trauma, they can be debilitating in our every day life. In treating trauma, it is our goal that you experience fewer, less intense symptoms, are able to think or talk about your experience without agitation, shift any negative beliefs you are holding onto, and gain coping skills to move through your life. Doing the work of trauma therapy is not easy. But having a therapist who has tools to support you helps make it possible. Some examples of trauma and major life events that we have experience with are: Family of origin/childhood trauma Relational trauma and loss of relationships Death of a loved one Bearing witness to a traumatic event Power and control dynamics No one trauma is the same and no two people experience the same event in the same way. Whatever is feeling overwhelming and difficult to you, just is. You deserve to feel better, and you can.</image:caption>

<image:title>Children - Children are fascinating.</image:title>
<image:caption>Kids are constantly changing, much to the dismay of the adults around them who might finally figure out how to manage one phase just as the next developmental phase emerges. Throughout childhood, caregivers experience the highs and lows alongside their little people, but things are inevitably so different from one generation (or year!) to the next. Therapy for kids is unique and requires a therapist who is able to adjust to each child’s and family’s experiences and needs. At Grounding Space, we strive to create a space where kids feel welcome, understood, and cared for while they develop skills, insight, and relationships to support their well being. We use games, art, special interests, and play in our sessions to support kids ages 4 and up in their work. Some typical areas we work with children on include: Emotion identification Self regulation Social skills Impulse control Sibiling dynamics Divorce, separation, or remarriage Traumatic experiences We work diligently to create a collaborative relationship with caregivers to support the work that we do in session with any child we work with. While this may feel different from other approaches, we believe that having the adults in the child’s life actively involved in treatment is paramount in achieving the goals each child or family may have. Being a kid is hard sometimes. Raising a kid is hard sometimes. We are here to support your child and you in being the best versions of yourselves.</image:caption>

<image:title>Neurodivergence - All brains - just like all people - are unique and valuable. Some work smoothly with the social norms, some don’t. Our approach aims to support neurodivergent folks to thrive in a world not built for them.</image:title>
<image:caption>People who identify as or have been diagnosed as neurodivergent might find that some daily experiences or aspects of relationships feel exceedingly difficult at times, while they may excel in areas where other allistic folks seem to struggle. Being neurodivergent doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong, just that the ways in which you do “it” are different than many others in the same society. Our approach to this work is to deepen understanding of how you or your loved one sees, experiences, and processes the world to support you in grounding into that knowledge while growing and adapting (yourself or the world around you) from there. Noticing the unique strengths of how your brain works will help us develop skills, supports, and tools for you to thrive and reach the goals you’re aiming for. We strive to be neurodiversity affirming, always. Some beliefs that inform our work in this space are: Neurodivergence creates challenges that are often based in society and systems, not necessarily within the individual. Focusing on supports, resources, and tools needed to thrive and taking responsibility for implementing them leads to feeling more successful than masking or forcing a neurotypical method. Neurotypes can’t be and don’t need to be cured in order for you to thrive. Language matters. We begin with our best knowledge of affirming language and make changes based on client preferences and new learnings. While many labels and diagnoses fall under the broad umbrella of neurodivergence, we specialize in working with individuals (and their family members) who are Autistic, ADHD, gifted, and twice exceptional. If you’re seeking an affirming space to deepen your relationship with yourself or others who are neurodivergent, you’ve found one.</image:caption>
