Discernment Counseling

Are you unsure whether to stay or go in your relationship?

Discernment counseling is a specific therapy protocol that is focused on helping those in a committed relationship decide whether to stay in, work on, or end their relationship.

Some ways that discernment counseling is different than typical relationship counseling:

  • Discernment is used to deepen understanding and make a plan for the next steps not make change.

  • It’s a short term treatment of 1-5 sessions with the goal to help you decide which next steps to take.

  • Sessions are typically 2 hours and include both time together and individually.

When discernment counseling isn’t a good fit:

  • A firm decision to either divorce or stay together has already been made.

  • There are active safety concerns within the relationship.

  • If one person is feeling forced into discernment counseling.

Once a decision has been made as to how you want to move forward, the therapist helps with recommendations and referrals for next steps.

Long term, committed relationships are hard work. Sometimes we need a space to work together toward understanding of whether the relationship should continue or not. This is that space.
